I have had a question popping up in my mind on several occasions over the last few years. Why do people constantly look for a reason to blame others for something that didn’t go as planned?
If someone makes a mistake, some are quick to point the finger and find a way to appoint a scapegoat. Often it turns into personal abuse, bullying and extreme cases, in racist comments. Why is that? Is it to satisfy their shortcomings? Do they feel better inside by lowering others?
Sometimes it feels like using harsh and derogatory words is a way to turn the attention to themselves. The craving to constantly be in the centre of attention. Most of the times, if we talk about social media, this is hidden behind an anonymous profile name and, no one but the author of the comment knows who it is. Is this making them feel special and a bit excited that they write stuff without no one knowing who wrote it?
You can see this behaviour in sports, politics, entertainment. You can find it everywhere, unfortunately.
Personally, this is very far from how my parents raised me. I was though to show respect for others and see things from different angles. My conscience would not allow me to live with myself if I knew my words or what I had written hurt someone else.
My conscience would torture me for it and, that is not something I want to experience.
I believe in constructive criticism and being able to justify why I have that opinion. If I’m unsure, I keep it to myself instead of making any unnecessary comment. When you do not know or have not formulated your thoughts, harsh and ill-considered words usually come out.
Yes, I know many people write in the heat of the moment, but somehow you still have to have that mental barrier that tells you that this is not good. We still have to try to think another round before saying or writing something on social media. Also, we must be old enough to admit that what we have written has been wrong, that you learn and do it differently next time. Otherwise, the risk to be seen as uneducated and arrogant might be imminent.
