The Saddlers will take on Portsmouth in the next round of the EFL Trophy on Tuesday evening. Which team will Darrell Clarke nominate for this match? Our players have suffered many knocks during the last few matches and some have to be rested while some have to get playing time. The cup is still a good way to bring money into the club. If we were to achieve another cup final at Wembley a good amount of money will hit the club. Money that could make a big difference during this summers transfer window.
The question is, will a fight for a cup win hamper the league and the chance of reaching the playoffs?
We could look at this in another way. What if we focus on the league and reach a playoff final at Wembley?
A trip to Wembley for play a playoff final would bring more money to the club compared to the cup final. In my opinion, the interest to get tickets to a playoff final would be much higher than a cup final. After all the EFL Trophy is the cup no one care about.
The last time we achieved a place in the EFL Trophy final many went because it was the first time playing at Wembley. I feel the interest from fans wouldn’t be as huge this time around.
A few weeks ago I thought we should aim for a final in the EFL Trophy, but with the change of form in the league, I have altered my opinion. I now think we should put all our effort into getting in that playoff zone and aim for that playoff final.
Who knows though, we could even reach both finals and have two trips to Wembley in the same season. That would be some for the history books.
