So we got our first defeat of the season. The display wasn’t that good, but I won’t play down the fighting spirit in this team. They did not give up and kept fighting to the last second to get a goal to earn a point from this match. I felt very frustrated in the dying minutes because we could have had a draw if we had been more clinical in the box, and Crewe has by the looks of it practised time-wasting in pre-season. My god they wasted time in the last 10+ stoppage time.
Yes, we wasted a few good chances, and yes, I wish our strikers were much more clinical in their finishing, but I think we are still under development.
Darrell Clarke wants our team to be flexible tactically, and for that to happen, we need to let some players make mistakes. In a new system, there is bound to be some mistakes done before everyone is on the same page tactically. Some players are better tactically and learn fast, and some might need some more time to adopt. The most important is that we fans allow them to make mistakes and not get on their back. Sometimes it feels like some fans sit and wait for a player to make a mistake to be able to moan and get on the players back.
We are in a good state mentally at the club now, and it is essential that we all try and keep the right mood and not begin to moan and complain when we all know what Darrell Clarke try to do here.
I hope we who go and watch football also know football and can analyse what is happening on the pitch and can see the whole pitch and not only what happens where the ball is. We need to be able to see what caused the opposition to getting a goal. I often see comments blaming the keeper for letting in a goal when the mistake that led to the goal could have happened much earlier. It could have been a striker who didn’t put pressure on his defender.
That is one of the reasons I never have an opinion on a match I haven’t seen because I haven’t had a chance to see and analyse what happened during a match. It is also why I am not that vocal during a game because I’m concentrating and focusing on what happens on the pitch.
I still think we should try and bring in a proper poacher. He doesn’t have to be involved much in the build-up. Not even cover much defensively as long as he’s in the box finishing off chances. We need that killer instinct in the box. At this moment I don’t care if he’s 18 or 35 years old as long as he ticks the right boxes for a striker with that killer instinct in the box.
