Walsall has rejected a bid on George Dobson from Sunderland, and an unnamed club has put in an offer on Morgan Ferrier which was also dismissed by Walsall. I might mark this day in the calendar because it happens very rarely that we are rejecting offers from “bigger” clubs playing in leagues above Walsall.
It is encouraging to see though that we as a club is in a position that we can reject offers. A few years ago, we took the first possible offer, but the board members might have learnt a lesson or two through the years. Or perhaps new manager Darrell Clarke has put down the foot this time.
Rejecting offers on players can be risky though if not the club who put in the bid comes back with a better offer Clarke might have to deal with two unhappy players. The good thing is that Dobson seems to be a professional player, he knows he is a Saddler until we reach an agreement with another club and I think Dobson will give his all for Walsall even if he happens to be here still when the transfer window shuts.
Sunderland is in some way a big club on the decline missing out on promotion from League One last season and will be hunting for promotion again this season. I have a feeling that it could end up in the same way as it did for Erhun Öztümer who left for Bolton and were left on the bench or even missed out on the match squad many times. He could have stayed at Walsall and be pretty confident of getting 90 minutes as long as he stayed away from injuries and he would also get his paycheck even though it might be slightly smaller.
